Ukulele tuning

Fifths tuning (G-D-A-E)

Fifths tuning leaves the ukulele at G-D-A-E, the same notes as a mandolin or violin. The strings are a perfect fifth apart instead of the usual ukulele mix.

How it sounds

It greatly widens the available range and opens the door to violin and mandolin repertoire, in exchange for completely relearning chord and scale positions. It is an experimental, very niche tuning.

Recommended string gauges

The disparity between the low G and high E is large, so standard ukulele strings do not fit well; you will have to mix gauges by hand until each string reaches a reasonable tension.

Tuning tip

If you play mandolin or violin, this tuning lets you carry that knowledge straight over to the ukulele. If not, be ready to study the new shapes from scratch, because they look nothing like the usual ones.
