Bass tuning
Traditional upright bass (E-A-D-G)
The traditional double bass is tuned E-A-D-G, the same notes and in the same octave as the electric bass. Although the tuner works the same, the upright is acoustic and its body and strings behave differently.

How it sounds
It is the tuning of acoustic jazz, the orchestra and rockabilly. The open strings match those of the electric bass, so you can use this tuner as a reliable reference for all four strings.
Styles and genres
Recommended string gauges
On the double bass you do not talk about gauges like on electric, but about sets by tension (low, medium, high) and type (gut, steel, synthetic) depending on whether you want a pizzicato or arco sound.
Tuning tip
Tune the upright slowly, and use the fine tuner if your instrument has one: these are high-tension strings and big turns can make them jump pitch suddenly. Let the pitch settle between adjustments.
