Bass tuning
Fifths tuning (C-G-D-A)
Fifths tuning leaves the bass at C-G-D-A, the same notes and layout as a cello. Instead of fourths, the strings are a perfect fifth apart, which greatly widens the range.

Strings and frequencies
| String | Note | Hz |
|---|---|---|
| String 1 | A2 | 110.00 Hz |
| String 2 | D2 | 73.42 Hz |
| String 3 | G1 | 49.00 Hz |
| String 4 | C1 | 32.70 Hz |
How it sounds
Each string covers much more register, so you gain a tremendous low-to-high range at the cost of bigger left-hand stretches. It is a niche tuning, loved by players coming from the cello or after extreme range.

Recommended string gauges
You need dedicated strings: the low C calls for a very heavy gauge and the high A a light one, an imbalance normal sets do not cover. Look for sets made for fifths tuning.
Tuning tip
Relearn your scales before playing for real: moving from fourths to fifths changes every shape. Start with one-octave scales on two strings to internalise the new geometry.
