Bass tuning
BEAD (no G string)
BEAD takes a four-string bass and tunes it B-E-A-D: it is like taking the four lowest strings of a five-string and dropping the high G. It adds a low B below the usual range.

Strings and frequencies
| String | Note | Hz |
|---|---|---|
| String 1 | E2 | 82.41 Hz |
| String 2 | B1 | 61.74 Hz |
| String 3 | A1 | 55.00 Hz |
| String 4 | E1 | 41.20 Hz |
How it sounds
It gives you the extended low end of a five-string without switching instruments or adding another string to manage. It keeps the all-fourths tuning, so fingerings do not change.

Recommended string gauges
You need a set made for BEAD, or the four low strings of a five-string set (around 0.065-0.130 for the B). A standard four-string set would be far too loose this low.
Tuning tip
Check the new strings pass through the nut and bridge without pinching: with thicker-than-normal gauges you may need to file the nut slots slightly.
